What to Expect?

When you decide to go ahead with TMS and contact our staff, you will be sent information about Sydney TMS along with the necessary forms which you will need to complete that allows us to find out more specific information about you and your needs. Once you have returned the forms back to us we will go through this information and assess if you are suitable to proceed.

The next step is to book a time for your initial assessment and planning session. This session is conducted by our psychiatrist and will take about one hour. During this session we will take some measurements of your head and prepare your customised treatment program.

At the end of this first session we will work out a suitable time for you to come back and start your treatment.

The typical coarse of treatment is 20-30 one hour sessions. Sessions are typically held daily from Monday to Friday. Your first treatment session will be dedicated to getting you comfortable with the technology. We expect that by the second session you should be ready to proceed with the treatment.

During the treatment you will be asked to sit in a medical chair much like a dentist chair while our staff set up the TMS machine. A personalised soft material head cap with specific markings for you will be placed on your head and the TMS coil will rest on this. You will also be given disposable earplugs to reduce the noise you experience from the machine during treatment. When the treatment starts, you will be asked to maintain contact with the coil but most importantly try as stay still as possible. The active treatment part of your sessions lasts about 40 minutes. You are fully awake during the treatment so you may listen to some music, or watch a video or television during the procedure. During your treatment one of our staff members will be with you at all times but you may also want to invite a family member or friend to accompany you. After the treatment has finished, you can leave and carry on with the rest of your day.
